More information about Inconel 600 |
Inconel 600, also named as Alloy 600 is a nickel-chromium alloy used for applications that require corrosion and high temperature resistance. This nickel alloy was designed for service temperatures from cryogenic to elevated temperatures in the range of 2000° F. It is non-magnetic, has excellent mechanical properties, and presents the desirable combination of high strength and good weldability under a wide range of temperatures. The high nickel content in Inconel 600 enables it to retain considerable resistance under reducing conditions, makes it resistant to corrosion by a number of organic and inorganic compounds, gives it excellent resistance to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking and also provides excellent resistance to alkaline solutions. Typical applications of this nickel alloy include the chemical, pulp and paper, aerospace, nuclear engineering and heat treating industries. |
Inconel 600 is a nickel-chromium alloy with excellent resistance to organic acids and is used extensively in fatty acid processing. The high nickel content of Inconel 600 provides good resistance to corrosion under reducing conditions, and its chromium content, resistance under oxidizing conditions. The alloy is virtually immune to chloride stress-corrosion cracking. It is also employed widely in the production and handling of caustic soda and alkali chemicals. Alloy 600 is also an excellent material for high-temperature applications requiring a combination of heat and corrosion resistance. The excellent performance of the alloy in hot halogen environments makes it a popular choice for organic chlorination processes. Alloy 600 also resists oxidation, carburization, and nitridation.
In production of titanium dioxide by chloride routes natural titanium oxide (illmenite or rutile) and hot chlorine gases reacted to produce titanium tetrachloride. Alloy 600 has been successfully used in this process due to its excellent resistance to corrosion by hot chlorine gas. This alloy has found wide usage in the furnace and heat-treating field due to its excellent resistance to oxidation and scaling at 980°C. The alloy also has found considerable use in handling water environments, where stainless steels have failed by cracking. It has been used in a number of nuclear reactors including steam generator boiling and primary water piping systems.
Other typical applications are chemical processing vessels and piping, heat treating equipment, aircraft engine and airframe components, electronic parts, and nuclear reactors. |

Fabrication with Inconel 600
Alloy 600 can be both hot formed and cold formed using typical processes. Hot working should be performed between 1600° F and 2250° F avoiding any work between1200-1600° F because the ductility decreases in this temperature range. Welding Alloy 600 can be achieved via shielded metal-arc welding, TIG, and MIG. |
